Troparion of St. Michael and the Bodiless Hosts

(Tone 4)

Supreme Commanders of the Heavenly Armies,
We, the unworthy, ever entreat that you
Surround us with the protection of the wings of your immaterial glory through your prayers.
Preserve us who earnestly fall down before you and cry aloud:
Deliver us from misfortune for you are the leaders of the Hosts on High.

Archangel Michael means Archistrategos (in Greek Supreme Commander of the Heavenly Hosts), the General, the Commander of loyal Angels of God, a winning enemy of Satan, a conqueror of the evil. He is believed to be a patron Saint of warriors of righteous battles.

In Hebrew name Michael means “He who is like God”. Just that by itself tells us how highly St. Michael is considered by Holy Church. St. Michel casted the Devil and all the fallen spirits from Heaven. Archangel Michael didn’t abandon Russia when he rescued the city of Great Novgorod from Mongolo-tatar khan Batyj in the year of 1239. Since that time many military flags in Russia carried the image of St. Michael as Archistrategos of the Army of God. For more than thousand years now St. Michael the Archangel has been said a patron saint of the Russian land. The Celebration of the Sobor (Assemblage) of the Leader of the Heavenly Hosts Michael, and the Other Heavenly Bodiless Hosts occurs on 21/8 of November.
